After heading downtown to the Rostertail for a wedding yesterday, Missy and I saw the bridge to Belle Isle. We decided to head there today since I can't remember ever going before. If you haven't been I highly recommend it. It's quite a contrast driving from Detroit into this huge island park, even moreso than driving into grosse pointe because the island doesn't have any rich people to sniff their noses at you. It was definately an adventure, and as you may see I had plenty of time for shameless glamor shots. I recommend bringing a picnic if you go, the single resturant on the island isn't exactly prime, but there are plenty of places to lay out a blanket and relax.

While reviewing my referrer logs I came across this ricecop image using a photo I took on I-696. The only place I have it linked is in this news post. Proof positive people read my news. Just when you thought I was going to give up, I've found a reason to go on! Also, this update is for JOSEPH who recently discovered the joy of RSS (like myself).

Melissa Master Browser After turning on my fiances computer to check for software updates I went downstairs for some routine server maintenance. While checking the event logs I found this error. Her computer was trying to designate itself as the primary controller for my network. "Is this an omen of things to come" you ask? I can answer with a confident no. She's just too sweet to try and become the master browser for my domain, although she could definately kick my ass in a fight.

After my last two updates about my phone, I thought I'd cross over into obsession status and give one final update. Verizon sent me a "factory refurbished" replacement at no charge which made me quite happy. What made me even more happy is that this "factory refurbished" replacement appears to be a brand new phone. There isn't a scratch on it and it still had the protective plastic covers over the screen and graphitti area. Whats more, I now have what appears to be a newer revision of my phone: higher model number, upgraded antenna, more solid hinge, and a louder speaker. The memory chip date is the same as my old phone which means this update is blasphemous. The date must mean design date and not manufacture date. That or June 17th was a very busy day at the memory chip plant.

Now that FutureMark is charging for their benchmark utilities, I thought it was high time to find an alternative. Enter FreshDiagnose. While not as thorough a benchmark as FutureMark, it more than makes up for it in detailed system analyzation, and still gives you an overall number for your system to use for comparison. Even better, it spits out an HTML report to your local disk instead of requiring you to logon to an online results browser to get your results. Naturally, I ran it on all three of my computers: Electron, Neutron and of course this server: ProtonX.

Steve's bachelor party was this past weekend and we all went to Planet Rock in Ann Arbor to celebrate. It's an indoor climbing gym with walls over 100 feet tall. After learning about belaying and how (not) to fall we set out to make fools of ourselves, but after 15-20 minutes we started catching on and made it to the top quite a few times. The beginners package included an all-day pass but after 3 hrs it was too painful to even hold a cup of water. Afterwards we went to a local titty bar and got blasted out of our minds. No idea what happened after that. In the end, successful bachelor party.

After hoping for a local Verizon outage to be the culprit, it turns out my Kyocera 7135 has dialed it's last number. After many hard resets and at least two OTA programming sessions the phone will now do nothing other than display "Service Required. Contact Provider." Using the power of Google I found this thread spelling out my phones doom. Fortunately the Palm side of the phone still works great so I won't forget who I am, who I know, or what I'm supposed to be doing. I've been told to purchase the Treo 600 as a replacement by an associate, but the screen is the same resolution as my current phone so I can't justify it. That and the fact that I have no money means I'll probably go the factory refurbished replacement route. Wish me luck, and if I don't answer when you call now you know why.
User Comments for 09-24-2004:
do you have insurance on the phone? i do on mine, meaning if it breaks or is lost i pay a $35 deductible and they send me a new one...
Zac
No insurance (cancelled it) but Verizon is sending me a new one free of charge anyways. It was their side of the phone that messed up I guess.

My phone has been searching for service for the past hour. When I finally got service it returned "Network Busy" after trying to dial for 30 seconds and went back to searching. Where I normally have 5 or 6 towers listed as active I now have only one single tower with a very low recieve power. The www.vztext.com website is down but there is no news of an outage in Google news. Either my local area has an outage, or my phone has decided to die. If you have Verizon and lost service, let me know so I don't feel so naked.

Rating: 3 - Link to this Article 09-22-2004 Syndication! View Webcam for 09-22-2004 1 COMMENT
It's the latest fad, so I had to do it. That and the challenge of getting ASP 3.0 to output the proper date format made it all worthwhile. In case you're wondering, I'm talking about some XML called RSS (Really Simple Syndication). It dumps my blatherings into a standard XML format that a standalone reader can parse and import. The advantage being if you have five other friends who also blather frequently you can read everything from one place instead of visiting each website individually. There are supposedly alot of other advantages but I think most of them were made up by people who got overly excited about XML. Regardless, I'm on the bandwagon. Just click that fancy RSS icon (Click here for RSS Feed) for the XML feed. I personally like RSSReader but you need the .net framework so Google can help you out if that's not your style. Of course if you're reading this THROUGH a news reader you won't see those links, but then again you'll already have a reader so the catch-22 is complete.
