BlogThe
Gnome Cam has been updated for winter. Thanks to
Steve for the graphics.
Today I decided to take my
Supercharged Mercury Cougar to work. It's stored in my garage all winter, but since it hasn't snowed in a week, and isn't supposed to for another week, I figured I'd take it out for a mid-winter drive. It was good to have the feeling of power again, and hear the bypass valve WHOOSH between shifts. After work, I was heading back from school on the highway and a Honda Civic pulled up next to me. He kept lurching forward, so I dropped to fourth and floored it. It was quite a rush. I saw him exit the freeway once I was quite a distance ahead of him. Luckily no cops saw my demonstration of might.
I had a wonderful birthday. My dad came over and gave me some
luggage, then took Melissa and I out to lunch. My mom came over and gave me a
tree and stayed for awhile. Then I went to Meijers where a cashier asked for my I.D., did a double take, and said "Happy birthday man". I got home and Melissa made my favorite dinner. She gave me
flowers, shoes, and a giant powerpuff girls card. After that, we had Pistachio pudding. In case you haven't heard,
I love pistachio pudding. Melissa's parents got me
fairy gnomes, and Myrone got me
sleepy gnomes. The
snowman approved.
After 3 hours of programming 1000+ lines of code, then debugging all the errors the "compiler from hell" kept spitting out, the program now works perfectly! It mixes two jars of paint, then prompts for a reload. Possible colors are Red, Yellow, Blue, Purple, Orange, and Green. We also have it abort when the door opens, or if the abort switch is thrown. I'm not sure if it's exactly what the professor wants, but I think it's pretty damn cool.
Here is the code and some videosI had a bunch of random web stuff I've made over the years sitting in various areas of the website. Most of it inaccessable. So today I decided to consolidate it all into
AtomicInternet Xtra. Anything not quite large enough to warranty it's own link I'll throw in Xtra. Now that have a "junk drawer" on my website I've finally satisfied my obsessive compulsive disorder (HA!)
Today I played
Starcraft, a game I haven't played in a long time. Myself and about 4 others would play pretty much daily after work almost 3 years ago, sometimes playing till 2:00am when we had to be at work at 9:00am the next day. We all got fairly good and wound up getting bored after mastering it. Eventually, we stopped playing and everyone but me who used to play quit, got let go, or was fired. We had some good times together, but all things change. Yesterday, a current co-worker, Mike Relova, challenged me to a game in it. Remembering how good I
thought I was I taunted him all yesterday and today. When it finally came time to play he embarassed me in it. Thinking I figured out his strategy I challenged him again and was beaten even worse! I was dethroned in a game I used to play religiously. After I got over myself, we played co-operatively against the computer and I was amazed. Here was someone who took it to the next level. It was no longer a game, but a science of maximizing resources, production, and attack strategies. Now when I play him I expect to lose, but see how long I can last before utter destruction.
As you can see from the webcam, it snowed today. Alot. I generally don't like winter because everything is dead and the sky is always grey. The exception is when there's snow on the ground and everything is bright, so as contradictory as it seems; I like snow but not winter. The other great advantage of snow is driving. I'm in the small minority that enjoys winter driving. I'm fortunate enough to have a rear-wheel drive truck with a tiny 4-cylinder engine and manual transmission that isn't enough to get me in trouble, but sufficient to allow for powerslides. Snow driving is like getting to be a rally driver without the expensive cars.
I just set one up in my front yard. It is the most obnoxious thing $49.99 can buy. It only took 30 minutes to setup, probably would of been less if the wind wasn't fighting me the whole time. Between the neighborhood kids and the wind I give it a 50/50 chance of surviving through christmas.
A followup to the last post, the sticker shock of Alienware gave me a new idea:
Myroneware. To answer your question: yes I was slightly intoxicated.
They just look so cool! Unfortunately, they also cost alot as well. Although, the
Alienware Grey model can be configured to be affordable, so I was tempted. I spent the better part of an hour researching other computers, and found that they actually aren't that expensive for what you get. Their low-end is actually pretty high-end compared to other offerings. Luckily, all the research wore off my excitement and I realized my 933Mhz PIII w/ 512MB RAM is more than ample for the stuff I do. I think I'll observe
Buy Nothing Day this year to celibrate my will power.
