Lunchtime for me typically involves two work associates. It would be more appropriate to call them something other than associates, but for the sake of simplicity I'm going to stick with associates. Yesterday Duane's hacked video camera rode along and the resulting shenanigans were recorded. Now you can experience first hand what it's like to be an associate, through the eyes of someone about to receive a shenanigan.

November LAN
With winter right around the corner, it's time to regress into a large group of pale hunchbacks and scream "Camper!" together. The November LAN is forthcoming and instead of setting a date and demanding attendance I thought I'd offer up the entire month of November to choose from. Pick your Saturday for this years annual event, most popular wins. Some options may be removed as Lisa informs me of my prior obligations for this month, but as of now it's wide open.

Why would you make us login? It's not like anyone who doesn't attend the lan's actually reads your crappy forums. Except your mom maybe.
MorlockPrime
We get plenty of bots that read our forums! And it's better then the Morlock Forums which use the cave wall with antelope blood as a medium. I bet deleting a post is a bitch!

Hahahaha... you guys are friggin histerical. My only non capable weekend is the 4th-5th. Keep in mind that the 25-26 is US Thanksgiving.. probably not a good weekend for that.

Morlock Debate Apparently the I'm not the only one who took the subspecies prediction article to heart. A recent jump to Something Awful yielded this political story starring the popular split species. I'm glad the article references the original movie, the second one wasn't nearly as involved with the storyline, plus the old morlocks looked cooler. Guess I finally have to chain Lisa down and make her watch it so she can appreciate the recent references.

After months of thinking about it, I finally found a good enough deal to go through with my dream of a terabyte. And yes, it uses perpendicular recording. Between my server, main computer and media machine I probably had more than a terabyte of storage already, but now I have it all on one (spanned) drive. It feels good to throw 30 gigs at a drive and barely see it register at all. Having that same amount taken up by partition information (by each drive) is disappointing though. Of my two 400GB drives and 320GB drive I only get 1,044GB of the 1,120GB available as usable space, even with the allocation size set to the 4096 maximum. I'm sure in less than a year terabytes will become common, but for now I can stick my tongue out at (most of) you while I figure out exactly what I'm going to do with it. Wondering what a terabyte looks like? Behold.

User Comments for 10-19-2006:
I'm disgusted. You had that terabyte for hours before you put up a blog entry.
MorlockPrime
Terabytes are so 2004 i'll be impressed with a Petabyte which is (approximately 1,000 Terabytes) or in about 10 years a Brontobyte (1 followed by 27 zeros)
Stavos
Impressive...again ahead in the computer race.

Some slumlords just can't get a break can they Stavos?
MorlockPrime
Ha! I may not have a single spanned drive, but I'm sitting on a total of 3TB at the house now, so take that. :P Headed out tonight to buy new cables, and then I will be booting my 2TB machine up.

I hate perpendicular recording.

Real Life Morlock Slashdot posted an article that predicts humanity will divide into two subspecies in the far future. Ironically, the link was sent to me by MorlockPrime, one of the two Morlocks who form my slumlord empire that has already realized this subspecies separation. The modern-day Morlocks aren't squat or of lower intelligence, in fact they both hold computer-related job. They do have blue skin and glowing eyes though, most likely due to living or having lived in my basement with little to no light. They also avoid the sunlight and prefer the indoors, but the original Morlock now spends a good deal of his time above the surface, and MorlockPrime has been known to venture out from time to time. Fortunately neither of them have shown indications of the cannibalistic habit yet, so Lisa and I continue to live the life of the Eloi.

So Long SnappyToday at 3:17pm marked the end of my Snappy powered Gnome Cam and the beginning of my .NET powered one. The Snappy worked great for over 4½ years, but parallel port video capture just isn't cool anymore. The recent addition of Gnome Cam Live was already providing me with a video source so I decided it was time to make the switch. Now that I control the entire image creation process I can put a temperature/wind speed text overlay on the captures, or network/frag stats during LAN parties, or a Florida/Michigan locator for Joseph when he goes savage from the cold weather.

The Hitachi marketing department paid good money for this jewel, and if I could justify the money I'd buy one just because of the video. School House Rockish characters should be used to explain all technology advancements.

It's too early for this already. The snow today actually set a new record for early snow. My initial thought is that, once again, Michigan hates me, but after reading the news article, it seems Canada is to blame. By the ever useful transitive property this means Ron is to blame.

3 days ago it was 75F. That has to be one of Michigan’s widest temperature ranges in a short time frame.

Brad, Michigan doesn't hate you, God hates Michigan and we're just innocent victums. Its God's will that we all move out of Michigan and reside in one of the southern states that he worked so hard on making warm and beautiful for us. I recommend Florida, Tennessee and East Central Alabama. If you MUST live in a northn state I recommend New Hampshire. Its the state God practiced on before making Tennessee.

Indeed ive talked to god and confirmed the truth. BTW Tim God says thanks your now a prophet.

Working with Visual Studio 2005 almost exclusively during my 8-10 hour workdays has me staring at two animated icons frequently. For my larger projects, I stare at each of them for up to 10 seconds at a time. The animations represent a process that will end in either accomplishment or more work to be done. I watch these icons with eager anticipation, hoping for the accomplishment outcome but more often than not receiving more work. They are such prominent icons in my world I felt the need to share them with everyone.
Build Build: "dots to box" - Represents the lines of code I labor on being compiled into MSIL in preparation for deployment.
Publish Publish: "world to squares" - Represents the deployment of my MSIL to the waiting server(s), where it will undergo it's second compilation.
I enjoy my italicized names so much I'll frequently reply with "world to squares" when asked if a project has been pushed yet, or "dots to box" when a project won't compile. The reaction from coworkers is always confusion and I rarely explain myself. Probably another indicator of spending entirely too much time on a computer.

Fool! you updated your article with this Visual Studio crap while I was typing a comment about your Pennsylvania trip

It's never too late to leave the dark side. Zend Platform compiles and caches to bytecode upno first request. No waiting during development. It's also better for your soul.
Duane
Why would I want runtime bytecode when I get runtime machine code? While Zend is compiling your source to bytecode, IIS is compiling my deployed bytecode to machine code. My soul has already been saved with bytecode deployment portability and system native runtime.
AtomicInternet
Why aren't you going into the configuratoin manager and unchecking which projects you want built so you only have to wait on the one that you are modifying? Right click your solution, hit configuration manager, and then uncheck the project(s) you aren't modifying at that time and it will only compile the one you are working on. You can also choose different configuration for debug, release, etc. Also, instead of just building blindly, look for "squiggles" in your code, it is a great indicator things aren't going to compile anyway.
The Elder
HAHA! Controversy.

Since Lisa has claimed me as her groom, we trekked out to Pennsylvania this weekend to meet her grandparents. I was subsequently examined and approved by all four grandparents. My Welsh name and quick wit sufficiently compensated for my balding head. Additional approval by both of Lisa's parental units prior to our Pennsylvania trip means I am now 60% complete with the pre-marriage approval process. Lisa lags behind at 20% having been approved by my paternal unit and one grandfather. Final approval is scheduled to be completed before August 2008, the earliest wedding date currently being considered.
