Server In The House My obsession with Windows Home Server is well documented, so naturally I check the team blog regularly. After a long gap I finally checked it again today to find a post about the Stay at Home Server ad campaign. While the acting in the clips is horribly cheesy, I'll write it off as their attempt to reach the average consumer, which went horribly wrong. Fortunately the most amusing part doesn't have any actors to make you cringe; enjoy Mommy, Why Is There a Server In The House?

Because a majority of people are uneducated about computers I'm sure this still confuses them however at least it's at their level, gotta start from somewhere.... Sorry I'm in a PO mood I just finished a 10 hr day dealing with our HR people in making an Intranet site for work, I had to explain to them for 45mins what a "link" and how users will know it's a link because it's blue text with a underline.
Stavos
In related news, Steve "Senator" Kelly was arrested for going postal on several HR workers. One survivior commented that it was a "bloodbath" and that Steve kept hacking at peoples heads with a machete saying "do you get the link now bitch?"
MorlockPrime
LOL for a second there I thought you were Ron... You all look the same to me, Candians and Morlocks are both hairy

One thing Microsoft doesn't do well--never has, in fact--is relate with the average consumer. MS takes a hardline approach that it's customer base is all-geek, and thus should "get" all the reasons you need their products. Apple on the other hand does that extremely well--and MS should take note and try something like that. Just take a look at how "untechnical" the Pc/Mac TV spots are.
brian
Those Pc/Mac TV spots are very obscured, and misleading. So a PC can only create spread sheets, not photo's or video edit, and can't network with other OS'? If anything they misinform the general public.
Stavos
Who the hell invited brian to make a legitimate comment about the post? You know I took a crap the other day and before I flushed, I thought I saw Stavos in the toilet. Stavos and turd look so alike.
MorlockPrime
Just to clarify, Stavos is just pretend turd, Brian is a real turd for ruining our comment fun.
MorlockPrime
I for one welcome my new pretend [turd] status, and will use it efficient as possible!
Stavos
Sounds like you're also welcoming your new bald Morlock overlords.

Snow A half-foot of snow today answered my question about global warming potentially ending big snowstorms. Drifts up to two feet were also a pleasant surprise. My hatred of winter is temporarily lifted when snow falls thanks to the light-reflective anti-SAD effect, and exponentially more exciting winter 4x4 driving. It also brings potential for more Yee Haw Sleddin which was missed last year.
User Comments for 12-16-2007:
Bleh. Have fun with that! And in parting, I leave you with: "Lionel coin bank lionel coin bank lionel coin bank save your money save your money save your money"
brian
Snow can suck my fucking ass! I want everyone who likes snow to freeze into the arctic tundra hell from whence they came.
Pissed off Excelcier
SAD? Are you kidding me? What a joke, you're just a giant pansy because you don't like the cold. Who wants to build a snow fort in my back yard?
MorlockPrime
Yee Haw Sleddin and Morlock snow fort building temporally relive my frustration from the snow.

After the Morlocks holiday party, followed by a visit from Chase and the flatlanders last night, I decided to assemble the inflatable snowman to help keep the good times rolling. Lisa has often told me how much she enjoys my obnoxious decoration, and the Morlock even stopped by promising to violate it frequently while I was setting it up. Repeated violations make me wonder if I'll get a 6th year out of this $50 investment, but even a 5 year eyesore was well worth the money, especially with so many great memories.

Your snowman is mighty, now prepare for the winter snow storm which means prepare for Yee-Hawwin season!

The Morlock messaged me today with the news that Google Maps Street View had added our street to their image library. You can even move the camera angle to the ground and see the car that drove by taking the 360° images. I wasn't able to find anything displaying a date in the imagery, but since my truck is in the back and my Cougar is in the driveway I would place it somewhere around the time I was shoveling rock in July. Now that I'm officially famous I'll be signing autographs for $1 each.

Amazing coincidence is that I also found this exact same thing unrelated to reading this today!! I was at work looking something up and BAM "Streets View" lit up and my eyes did too. I then proceeded to waste a full hour playing with the damn thing around Michigan.

Bested! you beat me to my Google Street view post! www.detroitarchive.com

Brad showed me that my place shows up on google streets, as well. Even better, my truck is in the driveway -- now if I was just outside smoking a cig at the time I would have been immortalized for life... :P

Lisas obsession with Carcassone and a few other Xbox 360 arcade games has finally pushed my gamer points over 1,000. By beating various online challengers she has fully unlocked the game achievements, which also happens to be the only game we own that's fully unlocked. With phase 1 complete, and Lisa fully ensnared in online gaming, the next step is to gradually move her up to more challenging games until she's fully dedicated to unlocking achievements in my name. The final phase of course involving the sale of various game currency she earns on eBay. Like a chinese game sweatshop but in southern Michigan.

Thank you to everyone who helped celebrate the death of my 20s today. Now that I finally reached 3 decades I'm finding it's not so bad. As my sisters friend stated, turning 30 means you didn't die young, so I can now list that along with losing my hair and growing a gut as my accomplishments for the decade. Gifts were strictly forbidden but Stavos broke the rule with a Transformers Monopoly game. Lisa was exempt and bought me an Optimus Prime, two gnome shirts and an Optimus Prime blanket. The Transformers theme continued into her mega-party plan including an Optimus Prime cake and favors. Excessive jello shots rendered me incapable of stopping the party killer movie, but everything else went swimmingly. I know most of you won't speak to me again now that I'm officially old, but I appreciate you stopping by for one last visit before ex communicating me.
User Comments for 12-08-2007:
It's only a matter of time before you explode. However Candy and I had a blast! Once we turn 30 in acouple years we will be allowed to play Transformers Monopoly with you again.

Ahh the Old Lloyd. My apologies for not making it out to your party. I shall make it up with a taco night.

Evaders! Stavos recently suggested avatars for the comment section of this website. Not quite sure how I would fit the images in my compact comment area I resisted at first, but some gentle coaxing and a few mockups later and I was convinced. What else was I going to do for two hours anyways? While I was working on the design (before crying uncle with DIVs) Lisa asked "What is your evader supposed to be anyways?" It required a full 8 seconds of mental processing before I realized she was mispronouncing avatar, which then prompted several minutes of uncontrollable laughter and Lisa shakes. So now that you know why I call them "Evaders", next you'll ask "So what?" Well I don't really have an answer for that, but the dropdown allows you to choose from some preset Evaders (uploadable custom capability coming soon). Once you choose one, the preview shows below the dropdown and once you submit, it sticks along with the other fields in the cookie for next visit. Yes, way over engineered for a website 2 people visit on a regular basis, but fortunately for those 2 people, I made exclusiveTM custom©® avatars©®TM and backfilled old comments with the same one. I promise I'll keep my sugar intake down in the future.
User Comments for 12-06-2007:
I for one welcome our new Evader overlords. I'm also happy to be your muse, but I won’t be completely satisfied until I can upload my own "Evader", and animate them to make you panic.

What you should have done is played nicely with the other children and used a standard gravatar site to pull the gravatars from which would then save your bandwidth, make one less thing I had to select when I comment on your blog (bad enough I have to enter a number), and allow people to set them up once and for all based on email. With Lisa constantly complaining about her single-core system and it's inability to efficiently multitask, I decided to upgrade her system with my old Athlon 64 X2 4200 . Why was my X2 4200 available? Because I upgraded to a cheap Opteron 180 I found on eBay. Why an Opteron? Because it has double the L2 cache and 2 more HyperTransport links than an Athlon. What does that mean for performance? Well as you can see below, not alot, but it did raise my total worth as a person (also known as the Windows Experience Index) to 4.7 from my previous 4.6 , thanks to the bigger cache and extra links. I was also able to bump the CPU score significantly thanks to the Opterons notoriety for taking my 10% overclock in stride. While my total worth still remains well below many of my friends, I sleep better knowing I've maxed out my Socket 939 motherboard in preparation for it's pending GeForce 8800 GT upgrade.

Last time the Steelers had a game on television, I discovered football freak Lisa and made a video to document her bizarre behavior. Tonight's game also wound up being televised locally, and this time I had an early christmas present in the form of a Greg Lloyd jersey ready for her to wear. Even though I don't understand yelling at the TV, I'm glad I was able to amplify her insanity.

BIOS Hacking Preparing to relax and enjoy my Saturday night, I booted up my workstation and noticed the BIOS version on my ASUS A8N Premium motherboard was 1009. A quick check revealed 1303 was the latest, which I promptly downloaded, and discovered dynamic BIOS updating was yet another thing my newly reloaded 64-bit Vista did not support. After installing my floppy drive from 1998 to complete the bootable BIOS update, I was disappointed to see my NVIDIA RAID firmware remained a lowly version 4.84. A quick Google search revealed ASUS is not as diligent as most motherboard manufacturers with their BIOS updates, and typically don't bother to update integrated device firmware. Fortunately the same search produced a link to the Award BIOS Editor which just by downloading makes you feel like you're sticking it to "the man". After loading a BIOS update I found on MSI that users reported also updated their RAID firmware, I was able to extract the RAID update and replace the old 4.84 block with the new 5.60 in the "official" 1303 BIOS for my A8N in the editor. Unsure if my hack update would work, do nothing at all, or completely brick my motherboard, I was surprised to have it work perfectly. The old NVIDIA RAID 4.84 configuration screen now calls itself NVIDIA MediaShield 5.60 with a moderate performance gain.
