Processor Upgrade After seeing a sweet deal on a dual core Athlon 64 4200 processor I was unable to resist getting one. It's been over a year since my last processor upgrade, and with dual core Athlons becoming affordable I decided to end my single core suffering. No longer will my web development suffer as I decompress an archive, they both get a dedicated core! As a bonus, they'll both finish sooner thanks to a faster clock speed. Those of you still using a single core, I bite my thumb at you. Those of you already using dual processor or dual core systems can no longer derive humor in my inability to properly multitask. Those of you determined to best me have less than a month before the next LAN party. Those in the know remember I disable network ports to machines that best me. Of course, a full old and new system comparison was performed, revealing how much a faster processor helps out with just about everything. Hey! Whoever just said I only have a GeForce 6800 video card, I heard you! Keep quiet!

How much was the duel core proc and mobo?
Stavos
My motherboard is socket 939 so it was just a simple swap. Processor was $150.

Tonight Jaird managed to find two other motorcyclists and his dad for a total of 5 people to ride to Royal Oak for bike night. Since he's moving to Ohio this weekend, and is the only friend I know that has a motorcycle, it will be my last bike night for some time. Fortunately he's only 3 hours away, unlike some guy in California, so I'm sure I'll still see him for LAN parties and the occasional motorcycle trip. He's a great friend and I'm sad to see him go. Bike night was definately the best way to send him off. Those of you wondering what you can do to ease my loss (Tim) can buy a motorcycle. Good luck in Ohio Jaird, if you get tired of all the flatness come back and visit.

A recent article mentioned on Slashdot suggests the end of wired peripherals in the near future. While I'm all about wireless networking, I'm not a fan of wireless peripherals. My reason can be summed up in one word: batteries. As long as batteries power wireless peripherals I refuse to buy them. It's an extra hassle and expense to deal with. How about using something similar to "self-winding" watches where a wheel on the bottom of the mouse or a pressure pad on the keyboard generates electricity to charge a capacitor as you use them? Those devices would probably have limited range or generate insufficient power and I'd be right back to my rant. To point out my hypocrisy, however, I do have a wireless combo for my media center pc, but that's because a 10ft cord from my TV to my couch would trip Lisa and cause more hassle than replacing batteries. As it becomes more difficult to buy wired peripherals, I plan to evolve into the angry old man hording my antiquated wired mouse and keyboard, cursing randomly. My mantra will be "Get wired or go home!"

7 years ago I bought a wireless mouse joining the craze it turned out the mouse sucked, weak signal no accuracy worthless... jump ahead 6 years I recently purchased a new Logitech wireless smart mouse. Well the mouse wasn't to smart the email button rarely went on, and the IM notification wouldn’t work with AIM and the accuracy wasn’t good at all even though it was 2ft away from the receiver. I quickly returned the mouse and bought a Logitech G5 gaming mouse with a 8ft cord. Cliff notes bought wireless mouse 2 times in 5 years still not happy bought haxxor approved gaming mouse

Today was (unofficially) Lisafest 2006. Lisafest refers to Lisa#2, a girl in my car club and not Lisa#1, my mad scientist girlfriend who genetically modifies fetuses for pending global domination. An unprecedented 16 Cougars showed up for the meet, almost a full fourth of the total that attended Cougarfest. A bad battery connection and a flat tire didn't keep John, BBox and I from arriving with 4lbs of corn and 5lbs of meat which were quickly consumed. Modifications included destruction and reconstruction of my subwoofer enclosure to fit better in my trunk, an entire suspension swap, a cold air intake, various headlight/taillight modifications (flashers, euro auto-levelers, harness hack), and various interior repairs. Today also marked the addition of mini Cougar fights to meet activities. Afterwards the Ohio and Illinois people returned to Beta for a showing of Grandma's Boy, a movie I highly recommend. An important ingredient for great comedy is to include an African tribesmen and various African animals in the list of characters.

Today was the hottest day of the year at 99 °F. Surprisingly May 29th was the previous record at 96.3 °F. The heat advisory suggested that I check on friends and neighbors who might be at risk, so I went to the pool at Lisa's condo to make sure everyone there was OK. They seemed to be a high risk group so I decided to spend the rest of the day there to keep an eye on them.
User Comments for 08-01-2006:
We were also a "high Risk" group we lost many in the heat around us. Luckily we have a $40 pool to keep us alive. And what’s the point of having central air if DTE shuts it off when it's to hot out? That’s it I’m googling for a Air Conditioner mod!
Stavos
That's interruptable cooling friend, and it saves you money!
AtomicInternet
Can't you have them shut that off? I could give a crap about saving money when its 99 out.
Tim
w00t I saved $10! i'll just disable the connection and still get the discount. Everyones happy then!

HPI Sprint Cougar After having some fun with my $30 Woot RC car I decided it was time to upgrade my options to a 1/10 scale HPI Sprint model. I snagged a nice one off eBay for cheap and (naturally) matched it with a Cougar body. Both Jaird and Keith have nitro models and I'm well aware that nitro is faster than electric, but I'm lazy and like the instant setup and low maintenance of electrics. This one is definitely fast enough for me since I have yet to master steering at full speed, despite it being all wheel drive.

Today is Lisa's birthday which means today she finally turned 18. Since I'm 21 that also means for 6 months we're only 3 years apart. As a special birthday present, I got the neighbor to wake us up at 8:00am with a tree removal service which made her very happy. Through some weird cosmic anomaly, today also marks the 3rd anniversary of Enorym's California exodus. The statute of limitations on friendship states that any friend who does not return for a visit after 3 years of absence officially does not exist anymore. The recruitment for a new Enorym never really took off, so it looks like I'm out a Myrn. Unfortunate, but who am I to argue with regulations.

After deciding I have entirely too much junk in my house, and that most of it was too large to ship (non-eBayable), I decided to try and sell my junk at my Beta house. Yesterday went rather well and I sold almost 40% of it (60% if I measure by volume). I'm hoping today goes as well, which would net me over $200 for crap I was going to throw out anyways. If you're "in the know" stop on by, I'll be here 9am - 5pm all day. Those of you who have been patiently waiting for the day you could buy my InstaPool, wait no longer. It's here, and only $60! Drive slowly, I don't want any accidents in the rush for my pool.

OK, it's really a Groundhog, but Badgers are cooler and I get away with putting this link up for mentioning Badger. It's been living under my deck for about a month now, and today I noticed a second one. Apparently my deck is a happening place for bachelor groundhogs. It's kind of cool having them around, but I know they probably aren't the best thing for the integrity of my deck foundation. Keith if you read this bring your air rifle when you visit Michigan, you can do some good old southern animal killing.

I'll bring my 9mm and we can BBQ them.
tim
They would have already been mounted on my wall.
The Elder
Badgers could kill a full size human within 20 secs, ranking them very high in the l33t ninja haxxor crowd. Groundhogs are the couch potato's of the animal kingdom. Urban peps call them porch cows. Dont make this mistake again....
Stavos
I'll loan you my unlimited pump rifle and a nice selection of high velocity pellets. Something that size will take a few hits to the body, so go for a headshot near a soft place (ears, eyes, etc.).
