We just had a 5+ hr downtime the other day from a power outage. As good as Brad's server stays up, it's still no datacenter. (I'm actually VERY suprised at how little the UPS is able to keep the machine up.) =(

ok, i am gonna use THIS forum to bitch about THAT forum.

In case you all missed it, there is a debate about the benefits of the adsense ads in the middle of posts. Good old FastCougar (who is sellinghis not-so-fast cougar) has decided to redefine the rules about paid memberships and banner ads. Apparently, his out-of-pocket expenses are too much to bear and he needs to generate more revenue to cover the expenses.

Pardon my french, but this is bullshit. I am currently looking for a new host for my gaming buddies and our website. I found a very reputable host that will sell 50 GB space and 1 TERABYTE bandwidth for $240 for 4 years (helluva deal).

You can't tell me that THAT forum uses more than 1 TB bandwidth, or that it has less than 5 members paying the $12 annually (5*12=$60*4 years = $240).

Hence, my claims of bullshit or mismanagement. I don't usually get worked up, but when he proposed his scheme a year ago or whatever, I was vocally opposed because of potential for mismanagement. We only have 10 active members and are still going to go with the host I described. If I even raise a question over there I know I will be labeled a malcontent and it won't do any good anyway.

I don't claim that he is taking advantage of NECO, nor even that he is funding his dreams of turbocharged Contours and Cougars. I just think the Tyranny of his authority is out of hand. I live on NECO more than any other site, therefore I care about its condition. But, the way it is managed allows for no opposing opinions.

I think it's crap. and now, all of a sudden, there are 3 THREEEE ads per friggin page, top, middle and bottom...and if you want to not see them, you have to be a goldmember....wow...gee...what a nice gimmick to get more people to pay...for nothing I might add. Except for the priviledge of having my signature deleted constantly for nothing.

Well, the agreement is since the ads are paying for hosting that 100% of the gold membership fees go towards CF. That's a good chunk of change and would help us keep costs down each year, since we all know its only going to get smaller and smaller...

I do agree tho, his host sucks, his ad placement sucks, and overall I think the whole thing was mismanaged. :P But, I also believe there's no other alternative right now. Although I have been working more and more on my new site code.

Okay, I feel proud that my bitch-thread is holding some kind of record time on this forum. But at the same time I must say that I totally have no problem with those little in-between advertisements on newcougar. I used to belong to message boards that would ask you to click on the advertisements just so that those sponsors could get the "clicks" they were looking for. Like it or not, this is capitalism. And so long as non-paying members like moi are allowed to post and have avatars, I say let those little commercials stay. And if there is some extra money going towards cougarfest, that is great also. I think all you guys are forgetting that although we all know that much money was squandered, these squanderers(sp?) are still trying to keep the gathering alive. Just play along with them until something better can be done about the situation. Are we really so lazy that we can't just scroll down just a little bit further?

I belong to a local car boards called kzoorice.com The owner has no ads and he only askes money for a premium membership to help w/ costs. He also just recently moved to texas, but he is still running the site. He's willing to shell the extra out of pocket for the site. The sites been up for years now. Where is that kind of dedication w/ neco?

I highly doubt that site your friend runs gets 3TB of traffic a month, either. (Do some checking, for that sort of bandwidth on a host that can handle it you're talking upwards of $200 a month in costs.)

People can bitch and moan all they want, until they run one that big themselves. My site for Truevision3D gets HAMMERED during normal months, and during release months (when we get 4000+ downloads of our 60MB+ setup file) we're talking a HUGE increase in usage. The costs are huge, but I also have a product I'm supporting it with via sales.
